SEO
SEO is an abbreviation for the term search engine optimisation, which describes the techniques that are used to improve the ranking and positioning a website will receive from search engines such as Google. SEO is a type of internet marketing and is frequently used by companies to try and improve the quantity and quality of traffic their website receives, which usually results in a greater number of customers or people making use of their services. In order for SEO to be completely effective people would have to understand the internal workings of search engines. However, only the operators of search engines such as Google know exactly how they work, so effective SEO is mainly guess work, although most people working in SEO have a relatively high understand of how Google works and indexes pages.
There are various techniques that are used in SEO and they can usually be divided into two categories called white hat SEO and black hat SEO. Some examples of black hat SEO, which is usually ineffective and reduces the quality and relevance or searches includes link farming, which is the practice of having a group of websites repeatedly linking to each other and doorway pages which are largely irrelevant websites which link back to the site to be promoted. Most modern search engines are designed to include pages using these types of SEO from their listings and most types of black hat SEO are now outmoded.
